THE BIG ONES โ€” board level

1. No power at all ("dead laptop")

Says: "Charger lagaya, kuch nahi hota" โ€” no lights, no fans, nothing.

Diagnosis (the power sequence ladder โ€” Section 4.6 has the full tree):

  1. Adapter: multimeter on the barrel โ€” 19โ€“20V present? (30% of "dead" laptops are just dead adapters)
  2. Try with battery removed, adapter only.
  3. Open the back, visual inspection: burnt smell, dark spots, missing components, corrosion.
  4. 19V at the DC-in pads on the board (multimeter DC): present through the fuse?
  5. Check the always-on rails (3V/5V ALW) near the EC/PCH โ€” these should be alive with just the adapter plugged in. Missing ALW = charging IC / buck converter to ALW is dead.
  6. ALW present but no response on power button = power button circuit, EC, or RSMRST# signal issue.
  7. Any rail shorted? Diode mode to ground โ€” under ~100 both ways = short โ†’ short-killer/injection to find it (Section 4.9).
  8. All rails fine and still dead = EC/BIOS โ€” reflash BIOS (CH341A).

Classic traps: dead CMOS makes some boards refuse to start โ€” replace CR2032 first on old laptops ยท a shorted USB device or a shorted RAM slot kills the 5V rail โ€” disconnect everything, boot bare board.

โ‚น500โ€“1500 depending on what dies (adapter swap is free profit: sell a genuine adapter).

2. No display, but power light/fans run

Says: "Light aa raha hai, screen nahi" / "Fan chal raha hai par display blank".

Diagnosis:

  1. External monitor test (HDMI/VGA): image on external = panel/cable/panel-power issue; no external image = RAM/GPU/BIOS/CPU-level.
  2. RAM reseating โ€” the #1 fix in laptop repair. Reseat, try one stick, try each slot, clean contacts with an eraser.
  3. Listen for beeps? (Some boards beep POST codes โ€” note the pattern.)
  4. Flashlight test on the panel: faint image visible = backlight circuit (boost IC/fuse/cable).
  5. Reseat the display/eDP cable at both ends; look for pinched/burnt cable in the hinge area.
  6. BIOS reflash (CH341A) โ€” corrupted BIOS = black screen with fans spinning.
  7. If it POSTs externally but panel dark: panel power rail (check ~3โ€“10V on the cable), then panel, then GPU.

โ‚น500โ€“1500 ยท RAM reseating service โ‚น200โ€“300.

3. Not charging / battery not detected

Says: "Charging me plugged dikha raha hai par charge nahi ho raha" / "Battery replace karne ko bol raha hai (battery is fine)".

Diagnosis:

  1. Adapter output (19V) โ€” and check the adapter's wattage rating matches (a 65W adapter on a gaming laptop shows plugged-in-not-charging!).
  2. DC jack wiggle test โ€” loose jack = intermittent charge (see 5).
  3. Check the charging IC area for heat while plugged in.
  4. Battery connector/OneWire: laptop reads battery ID through a data line โ€” dirty contacts or a failed pack ID makes the OS say "no battery". Clean the connector, test with a known battery.
  5. Software: battery driver (uninstall "Microsoft ACPI Battery" in Device Manager, restart โ€” fixes a surprising number), BIOS update.
  6. Charging IC / battery fuse / MOSFETs on the charge path (schematic level).

โ‚น500โ€“1200

4. Charging IC / power path repair (board level)

Says: "Works only with charger, dies without" or "battery charging slowly from 0% forever".

What it is: charging IC dead, a blown fuse in the battery path, or the battery's own protection board latched off after deep discharge.

Fix path: schematic for that board โ†’ locate the charging IC (BQ24xxx family common) โ†’ check its VIN, the battery fuse, the charge MOSFETs โ†’ replace the dead part โ†’ test charge current with the PSU/battery.

โ‚น1000โ€“2500 board level.

5. DC jack repair (loose charging port)

Says: "Charging loose hai, angle dena padta hai".

Diagnosis: wiggle the plug while watching the charge LED โ€” flickers = jack solder cracked (very common โ€” the jack takes all the plug-in force).

Fix: open โ†’ if the jack is on a cable/harness: replace the harness (cheap). If soldered to the board: reflow all 5+ pins with fresh solder (330โ€“350ยฐC), reinforce. If the barrel is physically broken: replace the jack (solder type or harness type).

โ‚น300โ€“600

6. Voltage injection for a shorted rail (the board-level money skill)

When: a rail is shorted (diode mode beeps both ways to ground) and you must find the culprit.

Method (Adamant/Rossmann style): identify the rail's normal voltage on the schematic โ†’ set the PSU slightly above it with current limit 0.5โ€“1A โ†’ inject into the rail โ†’ the shorted component warms up / the freeze-sprayed board shows the chip that behaves differently โ†’ remove/replace it โ†’ re-check diode mode.

Rules: current limit FIRST ยท never inject into the CPU core rail above ~1.2V ยท protect surrounding areas with Kapton ยท remove the battery and disconnect everything.

โ‚น1500โ€“3000 board level.

7. Liquid damage (tea, water, "garam chai gir gayi")

Protocol: full teardown immediately โ†’ remove CMOS, RAM, SSD โ†’ ultrasonic (when bought) or IPA scrub everything, especially under shields โ†’ dry 80โ€“100ยฐC hot air โ†’ inspect under scope โ†’ reflow corroded joints โ†’ reassemble step-by-step with function tests per stage โ†’ replace any corroded components.

Tea/coffee is worse than water โ€” sugar residue is conductive and must ALL come off. Tell customers: stop using it, don't rice it, come fast. The odds drop every hour.

โ‚น800โ€“2000 + parts.

THE DAILY ONES โ€” every week

8. Windows install / format

The professional flow: ask about data FIRST โ†’ backup if requested โ†’ bootable pendrive (Rufus + official ISO) โ†’ boot menu (F12/F9/F2 per brand) โ†’ install โ†’ drivers (brand tool or Snappy Driver) โ†’ Windows Update โ†’ activation question โ†’ hand over with a 15-min user tour.

Data rule: "Format kar do" โ‰  delete my files. Ask twice. Write it on the job card.

โ‚น300โ€“500

9. Windows won't boot / boot loop / blue screen

Diagnosis: error code on BSOD? (note it โ€” MEMORY_MANAGEMENT = RAM, INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE = disk/controller) โ†’ safe mode test โ†’ startup repair โ†’ chkdsk /sfc/dism โ†’ system restore โ†’ if drive failing (slow + bad sectors): clone to a new SSD before it dies (SATA/M.2 enclosure!) โ†’ hardware: RAM test (MemTest86), disk health (CrystalDiskInfo).

โ‚น300โ€“600

10. Slow laptop โ€” tune-up service

Diagnosis: HDD still inside? (HDDโ†’SSD upgrade is the single best-selling laptop upgrade ever โ€” โ‚น2500โ€“4500 with a 256/512GB SSD) โ†’ startup apps โ†’ temp/hardware (dust, thermal paste) โ†’ malware scan.

The upsell formula: SSD + thermal service = "laptop feels 3 years younger" โ€” every service customer is a candidate.

11. Overheating / auto shutdown

Diagnosis: dust in heatsink (open, look โ€” usually a felt blanket of dust) โ†’ fan spinning? โ†’ thermal paste dry (2+ years = repaste) โ†’ temperatures before/after (HWiNFO or BIOS) โ†’ if still hot: airflow path, dead fan, or board-level (rare).

Fix: full dust service + repaste = the classic โ‚น500โ€“800 service job. Clean fan blades, vents, heatsink fins.

12. Fan noise / fan error

Diagnosis: grinding = bearing dead โ†’ replace fan (note the fan model printed on it). Fan not spinning at all = fan connector/fuse/fan dead. Loud constant spin = dust or thermal load.

13. Data recovery

Says: "Disk format ho gaya" / "Windows nahi khul raha, files chahiye" / drive clicking.

Ladder: 1) Connect the drive via SATA/M.2-to-USB enclosure to YOUR laptop โ†’ 2) healthy drive: Recuva/DMDE/PhotoRec for deleted files, or just copy-off a dying OS disk โ†’ 3) bad sectors: clone first (DDRescue/DMDE) then scan the clone, NEVER scan the original โ†’ 4) clicking drive = head failure โ†’ stop powering it, refer to a cleanroom lab (be honest). โ†’ 5) Recover to the CUSTOMER's drive, not yours.

โ‚น500โ€“2000 logical recovery ยท cleanroom cases = refer out.

14. BIOS corrupted / update failed / BIOS password

Fix: identify the SOIC/WSON BIOS chip on the board โ†’ CH341A + clip (mind 1.8V chips!) โ†’ read โ†’ get the correct BIOS for that exact model (manufacturer site or BIOS databases) โ†’ flash โ†’ verify โ†’ test. WSON chips may need soldered-off + socket programming.

BIOS password: many laptops have it stored in a separate EEPROM or need manufacturer unlock (Dell: service tag code). Some are server-verified โ€” be careful and honest about what's possible.

โ‚น800โ€“1500

PHYSICAL REPLACEMENTS โ€” everyday money

15. Screen replacement

Match: read the old panel's model number (on the back of the panel) โ€” resolution, connector type (eDP 30/40-pin), size. Test the new panel BEFORE full assembly.

โ‚น300โ€“600 labor + panel.

16. Keyboard replacement

Know: two types โ€” (a) clip-on keyboard (older laptops: pry the top cover, unclip), (b) keyboard riveted INTO the top case (newer: entire palm rest assembly swap โ€” quote the assembly). Spilled-liquid keyboards: clean/replace.

โ‚น300โ€“500 labor + keyboard.

17. Trackpad issues

Diagnosis: driver first (Device Manager), ribbon reseat, then replace the trackpad (often part of the palm rest).

18. Hinge repair

What it is: hinges strip their mounting threads, crack the top/bottom case around the mounts (common!). Fix: re-thread with epoxy inserts, replace hinges, or case repair with epoxy + reinforcement. Quote honestly: a cracked case around the hinge is a bigger job than the hinge itself.

โ‚น500โ€“1000

19. Speaker / audio issues

Diagnosis: software (audio driver, default device) โ†’ headphone jack switch stuck (thinks headphones are in) โ†’ speaker resistance test โ†’ replace speakers (pair or single, note impedance) โ†’ board-level audio IC (rare).

20. WiFi / Bluetooth issues

Diagnosis: airplane mode, driver reinstall, antenna leads reseat on the WiFi card, reseat the M.2 WiFi card itself, test with a USB WiFi dongle (proves internal vs OS), replace the WiFi card (โ‚น500โ€“800 part, 5-minute job on most laptops).

21. USB ports not working

Diagnosis: one port vs all ports (all = board-level/hub IC; one = that port) โ†’ physical damage (bent pins, loose solder โ€” reflow) โ†’ driver (chipset drivers) โ†’ 5V power on the port pins (fuse!).

22. SSD/HDD upgrade + migration

The job: check slot type (2.5" SATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe โ€” check the notch key!) โ†’ clone the old drive (enclosure + Macrium/disk cloning) โ†’ swap โ†’ boot test. Also RAM upgrade at the same visit.

23. RAM upgrade / faults

Know: DDR3/DDR4/DDR5 not interchangeable ยท SO-DIMM for laptops ยท speed matching. Fault symptoms: random BSODs, crashes under load โ†’ MemTest86 to confirm โ†’ replace the stick.

24. Webcam not working

Diagnosis: privacy shutter physically closed (embarrassingly common), privacy setting, driver, ribbon cable after screen service, then camera module.

25. "Laptop beeps and doesn't start"

Beep code decoding (memorize the big ones): continuous beeps = RAM ยท 1 long + 2/3 short = video ยท repeated short = power issue. Manufacturer-specific tables online. Beeps are free diagnosis โ€” write the pattern down before opening anything.

THE RARER ONES

26. eDP cable / display cable faults

Symptom: display flickers when the lid moves, lines under pressure, works at one angle. Fix: replace the eDP cable (inexpensive, fiddly routing โ€” photograph before removing).

27. GPU / graphics faults (gaming laptops)

Symptom: artifacts, driver crashes (nvlddmkm), works in BIOS but crashes in games, no external display. Reality: dGPU repair is advanced (reball/reflow territory, GPU VRAM). Diagnose: BIOS works but Windows GPU fails, or check with a Linux live USB. Be honest about difficulty; board-level repair or motherboard replacement.

28. M.2 SSD not detected

Diagnosis: BIOS storage settings (SATA/NVMe mode, RAID vs AHX), the notch key (B-key vs M-key), reinstall the drive, test it in an enclosure (drive dead vs slot dead), BIOS update for NVMe support on older boards.

29. CMOS battery / date/time resets every boot

Fix: replace CR2032 (or the wrapped battery on thin laptops โ€” sometimes a cable-attached pack). Two-minute job, big relief. Also fixes some "boot loop before Windows" oddities.

30. EC / SIO / embedded controller faults

Symptom: fan runs full speed always, charging logic insane, power button dead but rails present. Fix: EC reflash (part of BIOS), EC reset (remove power + battery, hold power 30โ€“60s), or replace the EC (advanced, schematic level).

Desktops too: SMPS paperclip test + PSU tester, RAM reseating, CMOS clear, dust service, GPU seating โ€” desktop repair is easier than laptop (everything plugs in) and good repeat business. Add it to your service board.
