THE DIAGNOSIS BRAIN

How professionals actually think โ€” step by step, like a flowchart in your head

The method that separates diagnosticians from parts-swappers

THE UNIVERSAL 6-STEP METHOD (every repair, every device)

#StepWhat you actually do
1Ask & verify"Kab se? Kya kiya tha? Giraya? Pani? Charge ke sath kya hua?" โ€” the story tells you 50% of the fault. Then VERIFY the symptom yourself โ€” never trust the story alone
2Visual inspectionOpen and LOOK before any test: burnt spots, missing parts, corrosion, swollen battery, broken connectors. The naked eye solves 30% of cases
3Power testPSU / multimeter โ€” what does the device DRAW? Current behavior is the heartbeat of any board
4IsolateSplit the problem: which section? Which rail? Half-split method: measure the midpoint of the chain, rule out half, repeat
5Repair the causeFix the failing component โ€” never "shotgun" parts at it
6Verify + documentFull function test, then a Fault Card. A repair you can't repeat is a repair you didn't learn
The master's rule (Rossmann): "Diagnose, don't guess. Every part you swap without a reason is money you burned and knowledge you lost."

LAPTOP: NO POWER โ€” THE POWER SEQUENCE (where it stops = where the fault is)

The board wakes in stages. Test each stage IN ORDER โ€” the first missing stage is your fault:

Adapter plugged in (battery removed first!)verify 19โ€“20V at the barrel with the multimeter โ€” before opening anything STAGE 1: 19V at DC-in pads โ†’ through fuse โ†’ high-side MOSFETMissing? โ†’ fuse open, jack broken, MOSFET dead missing โ†’ fix here STAGE 2: 3V/5V ALW (always-on) rails alive?present with just the adapter โ€” powers the EC missing โ†’ charging IC / ALW buck STAGE 3: EC/SIO alive + RSMRST# signalEC clock (32.768kHz crystal) running? no โ†’ EC power/crystal/EC reflash STAGE 4: press POWER โ†’ SLP_S3#/S5# signals appearbutton circuit โ†’ EC accepts the request no โ†’ button/EC/BIOS STAGE 5: S0 rails come up (1.8V, VDDQ, +5V, +3V...) + VRM enableeach rail diode-mode to ground first โ€” shorts kill the sequence shorted rail โ†’ injection STAGE 6: CPU VRM (~1V core) โ†’ CPU alive โ†’ reads BIOSall rails OK but no core = VRM enable/PWM issue no core โ†’ VRM/enable STAGE 7: BIOS fetch โ†’ POST โ†’ displayfans spin + black screen = this stage: BIOS/RAM/GPU โ†’ CH341A reflash, RAM reseat THE GOLDEN SHORTCUT: where the sequence STOPS = where the fault ISFind the last stage that works โ€” everything after it is your suspect list ALWAYS: diode-mode every rail to ground FIRST on any dead board โ€” one short kills the whole sequenceand remember the free fixes: dead CMOS battery, reseated RAM, different adapter

THE PRO TECHNIQUES

The half-split method (find any break in a chain)

Chain of 10 parts, one is dead. Don't test 10 โ€” test the MIDDLE (part 5). Working? Fault is in 6โ€“10. Dead? Fault is in 1โ€“4. Repeat: each test halves the list. 10 parts = 3โ€“4 measurements instead of 10.

Current signature reading (the heartbeat)

Every board has a normal current story. Learn the normal story of 20 boards and you'll spot the abnormal one instantly. Log every reading โ€” your Fault Card database becomes your diagnosis superpower.

Voltage injection (Adamant/Rossmann technique)

Shorted rail: set the PSU just above the rail's normal voltage, current limit low (0.5โ€“1A), inject directly into the rail. The shorted component absorbs the power and warms up โ€” freeze spray reveals it, or a careful fingertip. Remove, retest the rail.

The schematic + boardview workflow

Schematic = the electrical map. Boardview = where every part physically sits. Find the rail โ†’ click its net in the boardview โ†’ probe the components on that net one by one (diode mode) โ†’ the abnormal reading is your fault. This is Week 8โ€“9 of the plan โ€” the skill that makes board repair possible at all.

iFixit method โ€” document everything

Photograph every screw location and cable route BEFORE removal. Screw map on a magnetic mat. Organized teardown = organized reassembly = no leftover screws = professional reputation.

The three master principles to recite:
1. Rossmann: "Understand the rails. Diagnose before you replace. The schematic is not optional."
2. Adamant IT: "Know the power architecture. The buck converter is the heart. Measure where the sequence stops."
3. iPad Rehab: "Practice on dead boards, never customer devices. Microscope work is 90% patience."
